RAIN ON ME

mm By Posted on 4
The rainy season is here and guess who has been waiting for it…ME. As a kid I would run out of the house to get rained on while jumping in water puddles. Just remembering how much fun it was made me want to experience it again. Who wants to join me? 😆
I am loving this weather because I finally get to wear my raincoat stuffed somewhere in the depths of my wardrobe – but first, I’ll have to rush it to the dry-cleaners – ready for the rain. Now, I can comfortably walk through the rain looking all stylish thanks to the waterproof fabric (Gore-Tex). Since it’s lightweight, I can wear it on top of pretty much anything; a suit, shirt or sweater. You all know by now I prefer a good suit.
I am wearing a rain coat (also known as a light weight overcoat).

Tips;
·         Raincoats and overcoats are usually the most expensive dress wear for men so try to buy them during summer because you’ll get them cheaper on sale. You can also get them on a thrifted expedition.
·         In this case, more expensive is better. This is because the fabrics used are top quality for what you need in a raincoat e.g. Gore-Tex. This is a waterproof fabric that is still breathable so that sweat vapor escapes keeping you fresh and dry.

Let’s converse about CONVERSE

I’ve always been a fan of Converse, so writing this blog was a pleasure. The first pair of Converses I got were a present from my sister in London. She didn’t know my shoe size and didn’t want to ask because it was meant to be a surprise. She could have asked my brother or sister, but realised that she’d have to get them each a pair too!

So what did she do…she guessed my size and guessed wrong! She selected size nine and I’m a seven. I received them with a note that said, “Merry Christmas Ian. Hope you’ll like the present I got you. I didn’t know your size so if they don’t fit give them to your brother then I’ll send you another one soon.” Unwrapping the package, I found (at that time) brand new edition Converse low top sneakers. I was super excited but super sad at the same time because they didn’t fit! Aaaargh! I was so frustrated and honestly, did not want to give them to my brother. So I kept them! Lol. I forced issues with those shoes and how I managed to walk around in them…I don’t know. I just knew they were mine and meant for me alone.
Even as time passed and I buy my own pairs of Converse, I still love them now as much as I did then. I love how they use fresh colors and the variety of prints they introduce each season. Converse has a look that’s sort of rebellious yet still remains classic – honouring their humble beginnings.
I’m wearing a Chuck Taylor All Star perforated leather Oxford Hi Top Sneaker. This is one shoe I can wear all week. It offers the best of Converse – cool, comfortable, and classy.
Grab yourself an original pair of Converse at Westgate or Junction Mall. They currently have a sale of up to 50% off for a specific period. Not only on shoes but their entire collection, which includes tees, hoodies and caps.

RAIN, RAIN, COME AGAIN!

mm By Posted on 26
We popularly believe that with rain comes blessings. This may be true, however in Nairobi with rain comes chaos – flooding and traffic to name a few. Figuring out what to wear can also be a problem, especially in terms of footwear. A while back I stumbled upon the rubber shoe, and I’m not talking about gumboots. I didn’t actually know what they were for at first, but I bought them because they’re unique and I haven’t seen anyone in them.

Unwisely, I wore them on a sunny day, and oh my Lord I almost cooked my feet from the heat. The heat was so serious that I wanted to throw them away immediately I got home – but I forgot, luckily so. Three months later in the rainy season as I was looking for boots and I found them under my bed and it was a match made in heaven – rainy heaven that is.

Through the rainy and muddy pot-holed streets of Nairobi my feet managed  to stay dry due to the waterproof rubber insulated soles. Never have I looked good and felt comfortable walking in the rain. These stylish rubber brogue shoes always save my feet plus the expense of repairing my other shoes which I previously wore during wet weather. You’ll only need to worry about having an umbrella and warm clothes as your feet are now taken care of.

REAL MEN WEAR PINK

Pink is widely considered a feminine colour, which is why many men tend to avoid it in clothing. You may refer to it as salmon if it makes you feel more masculine – lol. Truth be told, no colour is off limits. It’s just the way you style it and the confidence with which you pull it off.

The key to making pink work for you is ensuring it’s the right one. With a pink shirt, start with plain pink and work yourself up to striped and checked patterns. I chose a plain pink shirt with a grey suit. Colour combinations are key to getting that pink popping. Grey is great with pink, and so is navy. As well as the formal suit, pink shirts can be worn with denim as well as chinos for a less formal look for a night out.

Tips:
• Pick hues that suit your skin tone – darker skin-tones tend to suit pink than people with lighter complexions. Either way, pick pastel rather than brighter shades of pink.
• Wear pink in items and styles you’d otherwise wear to complement your outfit.
• Keep the accessories to a minimum as pink is a statement colour. Less is more.

PEEKABOO! Where are you?

Hope you enjoyed your Easter holiday which seemed to have ended as quickly as it started! For me this was a working holiday – busy styling clients for their various parties and events. But when you’re doing what you love there’s fun as well as hard work involved. So I can’t complain.
A while ago, moccasins or loafers without socks was the right way to wear them. It looked ‘grown and sexy’ but never felt 100% right. Especially in more tropical climates like ours, it causes feet to sweat and smell – not good for you or your unsuspecting friends when you take off your shoes and release an unpleasant pungent odour; like that fundi who comes to fix something then leaves behind a smell sooo bad you must open all your windows and spray an entire can of air freshener to get rid of the smell. *raises lips to nose in true Kenyan fashion*
However, the no-show or non slip ankle socks have transformed the moccasin and loafer game, keeping you comfortable and dry all day long. Sounds like a diaper ad! Lol. Seriously though, these socks are super comfy, breathable and perfect for such shoe styles.
I’m wearing the new Calvin Klein no-show socks. What I love about these particular socks is how they come in a variety of colours adding a fun happy vibe for your outfit. So even when you do take off your shoes, you’re giving people something to talk about that’s stylish and not stinky!

MY CHINO STYLE

Everyone, male or female has owned a pair of chino pants. Navy blue, black and beige or tan are the common colours when choosing chinos. They are versatile wardrobe staples that can be dressed down or up.
However in this time and age, I find them a bit too boring to wear – they’re safe. Selecting a vibrant coloured chino will bring life to your outfit. Colours play a major role in expressing who you are, showing that you’re not afraid to be bold in your style.
You might get the colors right but it’s also important to remember that without a perfect fit, you won’t pull it off. Make sure the chinos are well fitting, not too slim and baggy, and never forget to get the correct length – not too long or short either!

Chino Info
• Chino is a Spanish word for cotton fabric originally from China.
• Chinos lie between the spectrum of Khaki’s which are very informal and dress pants which are very formal.
• For bright chinos incorporate white and basic darker colours like navy to balance out the brightness.
