RED CARPET FASHION

When a red carpet event is coming up the first thing that runs through my head is, how I’ll steal the show…he!he!he! On a serious note though, it can be stressful. Having to look for a unique style to rock at the event is a challenge.
If it’s a red carpet event, I tend to favour the tuxedo which is classic and always works well; though you won’t necessarily be remembered in one. So I’m stepping out of my comfort zone and challenging myself by keeping the tuxedo and adding a twist – a colourful one. Colour is a great way to stand out and people are sure to remember what you wore.

Colours play a major role in your outfit. I try to keep it bright with my outfits like with red, it draws attention to you. The brighter the outfit the more you stand out, especially in the evening.

I also add colour by accessorizing. Keep in mind that I follow the simple rule to not mix my accessories. That is if my cufflinks are silver, then my watch or tie bar has to be silver too, not gold.

I usually try to find a statement look that is traditional like a cummerbund. A cummerbund is a broad waist sash which is often worn with tuxedos. It is now common to see matching coloured bow ties and cummerbands.

To finish my outfit I make sure my shoe game is on point. For evening black tie events, a patent wet look shoe would work well. Otherwise, you can go for a classy dress shoe with a matching belt.

Last but not least, I try not to forget my confidence at home. Confidence is key!

TIPS: •Invest in a tuxedo even if you’re not going to wear it often. You never know when you’ll need it.

•If you don’t own a tuxedo you can wear a well fitting suit with a bow tie instead of a tie.
•Choose your plus one well. Make sure they compliment and not compete with your style.

THE CANADIAN TUXEDO

If you asked me to name one of my biggest fears, one answer would be to be known as a trend killer…like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake back in 2001. This #powercouple decided to wear matching head-to-toe light wash denim on denim outfits. It was a travesty to fashion.

Since their failed attempt, the style disappeared completely re-emerging in early 2015. 14 years on and I think it’s finally back to stay. Although, this is another style I try to be careful with. When wearing denim on denim, try to avoid matching colours. The jacket and trouser need to be of different shades. This avoids you looking like you’re wearing a denim suit which is not a good look. Tip: for larger figures pick darker shades of denim with fewer embellishments and minimal patterns.

Denim jackets are timeless pieces that can be paired with various trousers be it khaki, cotton or denim. I decided to style my denim on denim look with boots to give it a modern cowboy edge.

OLD IS GOLD

‘When you start wearing double breast suits, you become a man.’ That’s what my dad used to tell me. I mean, how hard could it be to get the styling right? Little did I know I was in for a surprise.
Truth be told, I got it VERY wrong with the first double breast suit I got. Despite the knowledge I’d acquired of single buttoned suits, I had little to go with regarding this particular suit. With double breast suits you have to get deeper into the details and fitting’s. For example, the jacket must hug you and there’s no room to get the shoulder fittings wrong. Get it tailor-made because a bad fit will never look good.
As it’s fully formal and I didn’t want to get it wrong the second time, I decided to take baby steps and wear only the blazer. They say age and experience is what makes things and life valuable. Thus I came up with the idea of spicing up the blazer with golden button’s for a classic vintage look.

TIPS:  •The golden button’s are required for the ‘cutting loose’ type of look. Where by you can wear with jeans, khaki’s and even formal trousers.
•Play with different types of buttons – silver, pearl, and gold plated.
•Don’t button the last button of the blazer/jacket.
•Best suited for weddings, parties or outdoor events.

SUMMER SNAPBACK

There I was thinking summer would pass us by, it’s finally here!! And with it comes the opportunity to accessorize your style. For the guys this includes a basic essential, a cap. In particular the snapback.
CB3A5947
This is a new style for me, and I feel caps are a cool fashion statement especially on a chilled out weekend, since I’m usually in casual dress code mode. I prefer wearing a snapback to a baseball cap as it’s adjustable (plastic “snaps”) at the back and has a flat brim.
Not only does the snapback look cool, but also plays a major role during summer. It shades my head and face from the sun keeping me cool – literally. I place the brim of the snapback facing in front. These days people place the brim in all directions to achieve the “swag” look which some prefer to the conventional way of wearing it facing forward.
All in all, don’t be afraid to try a few, pick the best one for your face shape, as well as one that’s versatile and can be worn with a variety of casual weekend outfits. Keep in mind your own individual style, colours as well as embellishments and branding. I mean, you wouldn’t wear one brander Chicago Bulls when you support the Lakers would you???

Tips:
• Avoid folding the brim when wearing it. I prefer the brim flat because it looks clean and sharp.
• Be careful when buying a snapback cap. They don’t suit all head and face types. They’re best suited for faces that are short and narrow, however can elongate wider faces.
• Avoid washing them all the time to keep them looking newer for longer.

I’ll leave a video here for you to learn how to restore your snapback… Thank me later.

MEN IN BLACK

I’m not a fan of wearing black suits simply because it is a safe choice to wear and I am more about standing out in bright colors. Still searching for that yellow suit .

DSC_0239

Although, some occasions necessitate you wearing black. Over the weekend, I received the sad news that my childhood friend had passed away. Someone I was close to and shared almost my entire childhood with. We had a lot of good memories and what hurts most is that we can’t make more great memories together. You are one person I looked to when I needed a friend to joke with or talk about stuff. I will miss how you used to joke that you’d come to my work place looking for me to serve you, and how we laughed on the day you actually showed up . You were a happy guy. Always smiling and never showed your sad side.
During this photo shoot I kept thinking of you whilst trying to look good for the camera, but I know where you are you saying “huku cheza chini .” As you said, it’s not bye, but see you soon. So here I am saying “see you soon my friend.”

Tips: Avoid floral or heavily printed ties for a funeral. Keep it plain and dark in colour. I chose floral because Kevin was a fun guy and loved to look fashionable.
When wearing a black suit keep the accessories minimal and simple.
When dressing for a funeral your 1st choice of suit should be black. If not, you can go with charcoal gray or navy blue.

THE ALL SAINTS WITHBY CARDIGAN

It’s been a while since I last posted on the blog. I know I am supposed to be consistent but it has been crazy busy in a good way…😉

The All Saints Withby Cardigan has been around for eons and is an essential part of most, if not all mens’ wardrobe. I decided to match mine with an egg yolk yellow t-shirt, skinny stretch Levi Strauss faded jeans and a pair of maroon loafers.

A quality sweater is one that fits properly and adds bulk to a lean physique or streamlines a round figure. This cardigan is extremely versatile and can be worn with a plain or graphic t-shirt, a shirt with a tie or bowtie, and even a pair of jeans or khakis depending on the occasion.
